What is IPv6?

Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is the future-proof standard for network addresses on the Internet. The Government-wide Digital Government Policy Consultation (OBDO) has decided that all government organizations must have switched to this new standard by December 31, 2021.

IPv6 is version 6 of the Internet protocol for using IP addresses. It is the successor to IPv4. Version 6 is needed, among other things, because version 4 can handle a maximum of 4.3 billion addresses and is therefore not future-proof. IPv4 addresses consist of 32 bits, while IPv6 addresses consist of 128 bits. Other improvements include better routing and network auto-configuration and better data security.
