Faster to information in fewer clicks

Municipality of Utrecht has been working with LIAS Enterprise for many years. Since 2016, the municipality also publishes the Multi-Year Perspective Space (MPR) online. The website contains a large amount of information on urban development plans. However, the municipality was looking for a way to navigate through this tidal wave of data in a more focused and faster way. Inergy offered an effective solution by displaying the projects in the MPR on a map.

Looking for different form of presentation

"If you want to know how the city of Utrecht will develop in the coming years, you can read everything in the online MPR," says Joost Wenderich, Business Development Manager at Inergy. "The municipality noticed that few people have time to read through those hundreds of static pages. Citizens don't, but neither do aldermen and council members. That's why they were looking for a different form of presentation for all the essential information in the field of urban development."

Projects on map

The idea soon arose to project the plans onto a map of Utrecht. The map shows all projects, from municipality to street level. This way, visitors to the website can first select the area that interests them or immediately zoom in on a specific project. They can also specify their interests even better by filtering on things like time frame, type of project and project phase. Initially, the map shows brief information about the project. If users click through, they get all the information they need. Joost: "With the floor plan, users find out within a few clicks what their first hours were."

Applicable to multiple municipal plans

The success of this form of presentation for plans around urban development offers perspective for other municipal reports. "An investment plan can of course also be visualized in this way," says Joost. "In this way a citizen, but also for example a new alderman who is not yet familiar with the matter, can see at a glance where in the municipality something is being invested. That makes an investment plan not only more attractive to peruse, but also much more transparent."
